Useful Information

What’s the Climate Like in Australia? Australia experiences a diverse range of climates, generally characterized by being hot and dry in the Outback, and temperate along the coasts. Summers can be particularly warm, so it’s wise to pack lightweight clothing, though evenings may cool off, making layers a smart choice.

What’s the Currency? The official currency of Australia is the Australian Dollar (AUD). Credit cards are widely accepted across the country, but carrying some cash is beneficial, especially in more remote areas. Starting with about 300 AUD in cash is recommended, and more can be withdrawn from ATMs as needed throughout your trip.

Do I Tip in Australia? Tipping is not as entrenched in Australia as it is in other parts of the world, but it is appreciated for excellent service, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sectors. While tipping your trip leader is entirely at your discretion, a common suggestion is around 10 AUD per day if you are pleased with their service.

What Plugs Are Used? Australia uses “type I” plugs, which differ from those used in much of Europe and many other parts of the world. The standard voltage is 230V with a frequency of 50 Hz, so bringing a suitable adapter is advisable for your devices.

Is Australia Safe for LGBT+ Travelers? Australia is one of the most LGBT+ friendly destinations in the world, with a strong culture of inclusion and respect. Cities like Sydney and Melbourne have vibrant gay scenes, and events like Sydney’s Mardi Gras are globally recognized celebrations of diversity. However, as with any travel, it’s wise to be aware of your surroundings and respect local customs, especially in more remote or conservative areas.

What’s the Time Zone? Australia spans several time zones, with the most common being Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), which is UTC +10. Be sure to check the specific time zone of each region you visit, particularly when traveling across the country.

What Should I Pack for Australia? Given Australia’s varied climate, it’s best to pack a mix of lightweight clothing for warm days, along with some layers for cooler evenings. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to visit the Outback or other rural areas, insect repellent and a good pair of sunglasses are also highly recommended.
