Weather in the Maldives – the best time to visit

When is it rainy season in the Maldives?

Perhaps one of the world’s most popular destinations, The Maldives is on many people’s bucket lists. But what is the weather like the Maldives and when is the best time to go to the Maldives?

Despite what we’d like to believe it does rain in the Maldives and when it rains, it pours! So choosing the best time of year to visit the Maldives is important.

When are the best months for weather in the Maldives?

Generally the best months of weather in the Maldives are from late November to early April, though for the months with no rain you should look at January and February. Prices do tend to be more expensive during the peak months, but the extra is worth paying for almost guaranteed sunshine. The sunniest months in the Maldives tend to offer warm temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

The weather in the Maldives during its best months is something to write home about. But it’s also important to note that it is very close to the equator and so you can expect extremely hot days but also strong UV rays. Sunscreen is necessary – many travellers burn after just a few minutes in the sun in islands of the Maldives.

When is rainy season in the Maldives?

Rainy season in the Maldives is from May to October but you will find the worst weather traditionally in June and July. Heavy showers tend to be sporadic and even when it
does rain it’s still warm.

Our founder, Darren Burn, visited the Maldives and gives you an idea of when is best to visit in this video guide:

Climate Change in the Maldives

Climate change is affecting the Maldives though and locals have told us that in 2019 whilst they expected heavy rain in July and August, it rained very little whilst October and November provided heavier rain. More resorts in the Maldives are becoming eco-conscious with plastic bottles removed from many.

Unfortunately, the Maldives are suffering in the face of global temperatures increasing – sea levels are rising and coral reefs are bleaching. The government in the Maldives is now trying to combat the rising sea levels by building more artificial islands – pumping sand from nearby atolls and then creating new levels of land.

Choosing the best resort in the Maldives

The Maldives has hundreds of hotels to choose from and it can be a bit of a minefield working out which one is the right one for you. Each has its own unique charm and every one is different and so it’s important to know what you’re looking for before you set out on the decision-making process. From multiple island resorts such as Conrad Rangali, to properties which offer a premium all-inclusive plan such as OZEN by Atmosphere, our team handpick each resort that we work with – knowing quirks such as which are easier to get to, which offer special amenities and those which are most welcoming to LGBT travellers.

On a good day in the Maldives you will undoubtedly feel like you’re in paradise. The blue waters, the white sand and the sound of waves lapping at your room.
