Surrounded by the Sierra Madre mountains, Puerto Vallarta is protected from storms: the vast mountains essentially consume the storms before they arrive in the city.
It’s also one of the safest places to travel in Mexico. With so many wealthy North American ex-pats in town, Puerto Vallarta is also one of the most expensive places in Mexico. It’s not as expensive as New York though.
The mile-long malecón is the heart of Puerto Vallarta. Be sure to take a stroll down the waterfront and see the charming shops and long stretch of beach. You’ll also see the famous Puerto Vallarta sign at the end of the malecón.

Travel Information
Peak season in Puerto Vallarta runs from April to June. Over that time, most people visiting Puerto Vallarta (also known as PV) will be LGBT+. You’ll find the gay district in Zona Rosa: it’s packed with gay bars and clubs. Zona Rosa is Latin America’s biggest gaybourhood.
You’ll also find lots of straight people in Puerto Vallarta. It’s a cosmopolitan destination that welcomes everybody. PV has a big arts scene, as well as Mexico’s finest culinary scene outside of Mexico City. It’s a supremely fashionable destinations.
As PV is quite small, you can get everywhere on foot. If you want to take a day trip somewhere else you could head to Sayulita, a charming beach town with a popular beach. It’s a colourful, classically Mexican town but very tourist friendly.
As Puerto Vallarta is such a big tourist destination, there are plenty of excellent hotels to choose from.
A gay-friendly destination, Mexico hosts many same-sex weddings and is a great destination for gay honeymoons. You can have a full legal ceremony as a same-sex couple. You could also opt for a symbolic ceremony and have the legal proceedings done back home. Combining your wedding and honeymoon in Mexico is also a great option.
Take a stroll down the malecón, stopping off for a drink or two on the way. Check out the shops and art galleries near the seafront. When the mood takes you head straight to the beach.
Check our the buzzing nightlife scene. Puerto Vallarta is very much a party destination. You can explore the gay bars of the Zona Rosa district. Although Puerto Vallarta is small, it has the kind of gay scene you’d expect to find in London or New York.
Take a boat trip around Banderas Bay. You can go whale watching, explore caves and stop off at beaches along the coast. You’ll find many dolphins in the waters of Banderas Bay too.
You’ll land at Puerto Vallarta International Airport and transfer directly to Puerto Vallarta. Most flights into Mexico will arrive in Mexico City. You can fly to Puerto Vallarta from Mexico City in around an hour and a half.
